This is the match of the day. Japan's defensive work rate is extraordinary. Their pressing triggers are tightly organised — they force turnovers in specific areas of the pitch by pressing in coordinated waves. The question is whether Xavi Simons — who drops deep to receive and turn — can find the pockets of space between Japan's lines or whether the press smothers him. If Japan can force 10+ turnovers in the Dutch half, they will create chances. The Netherlands need to circulate quickly and not get caught in possession.

Germany face Curaçao — the smallest nation ever to qualify for the World Cup, with a population of approximately 156,000 people. To put that in perspective: you could fit every citizen of Curaçao inside AT&T Stadium with 10,000 seats still empty. This is Curaçao's first ever World Cup appearance and they drew Germany in Group E.
Germany under Julian Nagelsmann are considered one of the serious challengers in this tournament. Florian Wirtz is potentially the best player under 25 at the entire World Cup — a complete playmaker who creates, scores and defends. Jamal Musiala alongside him gives Germany two of the most technically gifted midfielders of their generation. The question is not whether Germany will beat Curaçao — they will — but how convincingly and who takes the goals.
Curaçao captain Leandro Bacuna will make history today as the first Curaçaoan to play at a World Cup. Their qualification run included seven wins from 10 CONCACAF group games — they are not passengers. But Germany are on another level entirely. Expect Germany 4-0 or 5-0.
🇨🇮 Ivory Coast vs Ecuador — 9PM ET · Lincoln Financial Field Philadelphia
The most underrated match of the day. Ecuador — despite being ranked 23rd in the world — have been called the "sleeper team" of the 2026 World Cup by multiple analysts. They conceded just 11 goals in 18 CONMEBOL qualifying matches. Their striker Enner Valencia remains one of the most clinical finishers in South American football at 36. Their defensive organization under Félix Sánchez is genuinely world-class for a side of their resources.
Ivory Coast have the individual quality — Sébastien Haller returned from testicular cancer to become one of the best strikers in the Bundesliga again, and Franck Kessié controls central midfield with the authority of a much bigger nation. But Ivory Coast's World Cup campaigns have historically underperformed relative to their talent pool.
Draw 1-1. Ecuador score against the run of play through Valencia's clinical finishing in the first half. Haller equalizes with a powerful header in the second. Both teams finish with a point — and both face Ecuador and Germany as the group plays out. This result keeps Group E fascinating all the way to Matchday 3.

What Is the Netherlands' World Cup 2026 Group?
The Netherlands are in Group F alongside Japan, Sweden and Tunisia. This is considered one of the more competitive groups at the 2026 World Cup. Sweden qualified through UEFA with a strong qualifying campaign. Japan have established themselves as a genuine World Cup upset threat. Tunisia are technically the weakest side in the group but are organized and defensively disciplined.
The Netherlands' schedule: Japan (Jun 14), Sweden (Jun 20), Tunisia (Jun 25). On paper they win the group. Japan on Jun 14 is the biggest threat to that — Sweden and Tunisia are expected to be more straightforward. But "expected" means very little at a World Cup — as Brazil just found out against Morocco, and as Scotland proved by topping Group C after one game.
