Brazil face Morocco in what is the marquee Group C fixture at the 2026 World Cup. Neymar is not expected to start β he is racing to recover from a calf injury. Igor Thiago leads the attack supported by Vinicius Jr, Raphinha and Matheus Cunha under Carlo Ancelotti. Morocco arrive as the highest-ranked African team in the tournament and the only side to reach a World Cup semi-final from Africa (2022).
This is the match the neutrals have been waiting for. Brazil against the team that made Africa genuinely believe they could win a World Cup. In 2022, Morocco beat Spain, Portugal and Belgium before losing to France in the semi-final. That squad β now four years more experienced β is not one to dismiss simply because their opponent has won five world titles.
Brazil are not the same force they were in their peak years under Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Rivaldo. Ancelotti has improved their defensive structure but the question about their mental resilience in knockout moments β they've lost four of their last five World Cup quarter-finals β hangs over everything. A difficult opener against Morocco could set the tone for the whole tournament.
π©Ή Neymar Injury Update β Is He Playing?
Neymar is not expected to start against Morocco. He sustained a calf injury last month and has been doing light training. Brazil have not ruled him out of the tournament but Carlo Ancelotti is taking no risks with his fitness. Igor Thiago β who has scored twice in his first four caps β is expected to lead the attack in his place.
Confirmed Injuries β Morocco
Morocco have concerns of their own. Both Noussair Mazraoui and Abdessamad Ezzalzouli hobbled off in their final warm-up game against Norway. Mazraoui is expected to start but is not fully fit. Soufiane Rahimi is nursing a muscle strain. Morocco cannot afford to lose their first-choice right back for a game against Vinicius Jr.

π The Key Battle: Vinicius Jr vs Hakimi
Two Real Madrid teammates, close friends off the pitch β and in direct opposition for 90 minutes at MetLife Stadium. Vinicius operates on the left, Hakimi defends on the right for Morocco. They know every detail of each other's game. That familiarity cuts both ways: Hakimi knows how Vinicius likes to cut inside on his right foot; Vinicius knows Hakimi charges forward and leaves space behind him.
Hakimi is not fully fit. That changes the equation. If Brazil can get Vinicius one-on-one against a less-than-100% Hakimi in the second half, the game opens up. Ancelotti will have planned his substitution moment carefully β bringing Endrick or Martinelli on for Igor Thiago to give Morocco a different problem when they're tired.
Micro Angle: Can Morocco Defend Like 2022?
Morocco's 2022 success was built on the most organized defensive shape at that tournament. They conceded just one goal in the entire run to the semi-final (an own goal vs Canada). Their low block with Amrabat sweeping ahead of the defense was virtually impenetrable. The question for 2026: can they replicate that intensity for seven games instead of six, and against a Brazil with better attacking depth than Portugal or Spain?
Walid Regragui's side have added attacking quality since Qatar β but their identity remains defensive first. That approach may win them a point here. Beating Brazil outright requires something exceptional.
Macro Angle: What This Group Means
Group C also contains Haiti and Scotland. On paper, Brazil should win the group comfortably. But if Morocco take a point or three here, everything becomes tense. Scotland are competent enough to punish both teams if they drop their level. A draw today for Morocco would be an enormous result β and history says they are entirely capable of it.
Prediction
Brazil 1-0 Morocco. Tight first half, Morocco defend well and limit Brazil's chances. Vinicius finds one moment of quality in the second half to break the deadlock. Ancelotti's substitutions β likely Endrick late on β seal it. Brazil win but they don't convince. Morocco leave with heads held high having made Brazil work for every inch.
